A Japanese crop,
a gradual process.

Japanese Millet is a cultivated East Asian Echinochloa associated with the E. crus-galli lineage. Archaeobotanical research supports a long history of management and cultivation in Japan, but not one narrowly dated domestication event.

The atlas therefore shows a broad Japanese cultivation history rather than a precise birthplace. It keeps this taxon separate from Indian Barnyard Millet and from modern North American forage uses.

every barnyard millet.

Common names move easily across seed markets. Taxonomy and place keep Japan’s cultivated Echinochloa from being collapsed into another crop.

Seed enlargement and archaeological presence can indicate management, but they do not alone settle when cultivation became domestication. Written and agronomic records illuminate later importance, not the crop’s first beginning.
